GUM DISEASE

It is estimated that nine out of ten adults in Ireland have periodontal disease to some degree. In addition to being the primary cause of tooth loss, gum disease is also linked to an increased risk of other serious health conditions, such as heart disease and strokes.

Benefits of Smile Hub Dental Clinic's hygienist service

Our team of five dental hygienists and therapists is managed by a periodontist with extensive experience.

Your dental hygiene and oral health are in the best possible hands, given the profundity of our team's knowledge and expertise.

We use air polishing technology to remove stains from your teeth swiftly and gently.

Your hygienist will provide you with individualised recommendations to optimise your oral hygiene routine.

WHAT IS THE HYGIENIST'S JOB?

Scaling and polishing is the method by which dental hygienists remove plaque from your teeth and around the gingival line. During the scaling phase, your hygienist will use handheld instruments to remove any plaque deposits before polishing your teeth to leave them feeling and looking clean and healthy.

WHY VISIT THE HYGIENIST?

A high standard of twice-daily tooth brushing is necessary for maintaining oral health, but it is not sufficient to reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Regardless of how well you brush, plaque will accumulate in areas that are difficult to reach and eradicate. Only by visiting a hygienist on a regular basis can you ensure that these plaque deposits are removed before they become a more serious issue.

WHY IS REMOVING SO IMPORTANT?

PLAQUE

Plaque deposits adherent films that capture bacteria. When you consume sugary foods, these bacteria produce acids that attack your teeth, eroding the enamel and eventually causing tooth decay. Plaque accumulation can also result in gum disease, beginning with gingivitis, which is characterised by swollen, bleeding gums, and progressing to periodontitis, in which the gums pull away from the teeth, forming deep cavities around them, and eventually leading to loose, potentially lost teeth.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR HYGIENISTS AND THERAPISTS DURING AN APPOINTMENT

If you are a new patient, your first appointment will be more involved than a routine one, as we get to know you and assess the current state of your teeth and gums. This appointment lasts for 60 minutes, which is twice as long as a typical visit.
