BRUXISM

Bruxism is another term for teeth grinding, which studies indicate impacts at least 10 percent of the population. Many people are unaware they have bruxism because it occurs during sleep or when they are concentrating, and a dentist may be the one to observe the typical signs of tooth wear associated with it.

SYMPTOMS OF BRUXISM

- Facial pain

- Headaches

- Earache

- Disrupted sleep

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is characterised by pain and stiffness in the jaw joint and adjacent muscles. Teeth that have been worn down, resulting in increased sensitivity, tooth loss, fractured teeth, or fillings. When a person grinds their teeth frequently, the outer layer of enamel is worn away, exposing the sensitive interior layer of dentin. This is a common complaint that prompts patients to seek treatment, or they may observe that their teeth are becoming shorter.

WHAT OCCURS IN A BRUXISM CONSULTATION?

The clinician examines and diagnoses the patient's dentition. If bruxism is detected, the priority will be to cease it, followed by repair of any damage. Other causes of dental wear include acidic, carbonated, and sugary beverages and aggressive tooth brushing.

RISK ANALYSIS

The dentist will determine whether tooth attrition is the result of grinding teeth alone or a combination of factors. The dentist will examine the jaw joints and muscles, and will inquire whether the patient has morning migraines.

HOW CAN BRUXISM BE TREATED?

If bruxism is the only or primary cause of tooth wear, the first move may be to use a splint to prevent further damage. Frequently, the optimal solution is a Michigan splint, a form of stabilisation splint that requires special moulds and measurements and is primarily used by prosthodontists. At Smile Hub Dental Clinic, we have a particular interest in dental wear management and are proficient with these instruments.
