The rules in Ireland
- Up to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide: can be sold to anyone. That's whitening toothpaste, strips and pens in shops.
- Over 0.1% and up to 6%: only a registered dentist can supply it, and the dentist does the first use.
- Over 6%: banned in the EU. Strong strips sold online can contain far more and burn the gums.
- Under 18s: no whitening products stronger than 0.1%.
Whitening and bonding
Whiten first. Composite keeps the shade it's made in, so the dentist whitens your own teeth, waits about two weeks for the colour to settle and the enamel to bond well, then matches the bonding to the new shade. Whiten after bonding and your own teeth lighten while the bonding stays the old colour.

Questions
Whitening questions
How much is teeth whitening in Dublin?
From a dentist, a take-home kit with custom trays typically costs €295 to €390. Whitening in the chair is €315 to €895.
Is teeth bleaching the same as teeth whitening?
Yes. Both mean lightening teeth with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which releases it.
Does it have to be a dentist?
For anything that really changes the shade, yes. Products stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied by a registered dentist, who does the first use. Above 6% is banned in the EU.
Can under-18s get their teeth whitened?
No. Whitening products stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide must not be used on anyone under 18.
Will whitening change the colour of bonding?
No. Composite doesn't whiten. Whiten first, wait about two weeks, then have the bonding matched to your new shade.
