Edge bonding is the right job when the problem is at the edge. If you also want a different colour, or the teeth need reshaping on the front, the dentist covers the whole face of the tooth instead: that's a composite veneer. A good dentist tells you which each tooth needs and why.
What happens on the day
- Shade match. The dentist picks a composite shade to match the tooth.
- Preparing the edge. The surface is cleaned and lightly roughened so the resin grips. No injection in most cases.
- Building it up. Composite goes on in thin layers, each set with a blue curing light.
- Shaping and polishing. The dentist shapes the edge to match its neighbour, checks your bite and polishes it to a shine.
A few teeth usually take under an hour or two. You can eat and drink as normal the same day.
How many teeth?
One tooth for a single chip. Most people with worn edges do the four or six upper front teeth so the edge line is even: €600 to €1,200 for four and €900 to €1,800 for six. Grinding wears edges down, so if that's the cause, ask about a night guard (€150 to €350) to protect the new edges.
