Before you book
How to check a dentist is registered in Ireland
Search the Dental Council's register at dentalcouncil.ie by the dentist's name or registration number. It takes a minute, and it matters: only a registered dentist can legally do composite bonding in Ireland.
Four steps
- Get the dentist's full name. Ask who will actually do your treatment. The person is on the register, not the practice.
- Open dentalcouncil.ie and find the box headed Search the Register.
- Choose Dentists and search by name or registration number.
- Check it's your dentist. If two people share a name, ask for the registration number. Not on the register: don't book.
Three more things worth checking
The fee notice. Dentists must display their private fees where you can read them before treatment. Where a fee varies, the notice shows the lowest and the highest. Ask to see it.
Cosmetic dentist isn't a registered title. The only dental specialties on the specialist register are oral surgery and orthodontics.
Whitening follows the same rule. Gels stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only come from a registered dentist, who does the first use. A salon offering strong whitening without a dentist is outside the rules.
We only pass requests to practices whose dentists are on the register, and you get the dentist's name before you go.

Questions
Registration questions
How do I check if a dentist is registered in Ireland?
Go to dentalcouncil.ie and use Search the Register. Choose Dentists, type the dentist's name or registration number and search.
Can a beautician do composite bonding or tooth whitening?
No. Practising dentistry without being a registered dentist is an offence under section 51 of the Dentists Act 1985, and whitening products stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied by a dentist.
Is there a register of cosmetic dentists?
No. Ireland's specialist register covers oral surgery and orthodontics only. Cosmetic dentist describes the work a dentist does, not a registered title.
What if something goes wrong after treatment?
Talk to the treating dentist first, then use the practice's complaints procedure. The Dental Council deals with serious fitness-to-practise issues, but it can't order a refund or a redo.
