What's included

The price a tooth covers the shade match, building up the composite, shaping, polishing and a bite check before you leave. The consultation is usually separate: €55 to €70, and free at some practices. There is no VAT on dental treatment.

What pushes it up or down

Edge work costs less than covering the whole tooth. More teeth means a bigger bill but often a lower price a tooth. Whitening first adds about €295 to €390 for a dentist's take-home kit. Grinding may mean a night guard, €150 to €350.

How many teeth people do

One tooth for a chip. Two for a gap between the front teeth. Most smile makeovers are the four or six upper front teeth that show when you smile, and eight if your smile is wide: €720 to €1,300 for four, €1,080 to €1,950 for six.

These are typical prices across the market, not a quote. A dentist confirms your price after looking at your teeth, and you don't pay for anything you haven't agreed to.

What a full smile costs

Bonding is priced per tooth, so the total is simple arithmetic. Here it is at the typical Dublin price, with edge bonding alongside for teeth that only need their edges rebuilt.

TeethFull bondingEdge bonding
One toothA single chip or a worn corner€180 to €325€150 to €300
Two teethA gap between the front teeth€360 to €650€300 to €600

Six teethThe upper front teeth that show when you smile€1,080 to €1,950€900 to €1,800
Eight teethA wide smile, out to the premolars€1,440 to €2,600€1,200 to €2,400

Other costs to plan for

  • The consultation. €55 to €70 at most practices, free at some. Some take it off the treatment price if you go ahead.
  • Whitening first. Composite doesn't whiten, so if you want brighter teeth you whiten before the bonding goes on. A dentist's take-home kit is about €295 to €390.
  • A night guard if you grind your teeth, so the edges don't chip: €150 to €350.
  • Upkeep. A scale and polish every six months keeps stain off the composite: €85 to €100, or €15 if you qualify for PRSI dental benefit. A small chip later is repaired for about the price of edge bonding a tooth.

Paying for it

There is no VAT on dental treatment. Revenue gives 20% tax relief on non-routine dental treatment, and its list includes veneers and etched fillings; your dentist fills in a Med 2 form afterwards. Ask before treatment whether your bonding will be certified that way. Many practices also offer monthly payment plans. Compare the total you'd repay with a credit union loan before you sign.

Low prices: what to ask

A low price a tooth is usually edge work, or the price for the smallest job the practice does. Ask four things: is it edge bonding or a full composite veneer on each tooth, is the consultation extra, what happens if a tooth chips in the first year, and who will do the work. Then check the dentist on the register. It takes a minute.

Questions

Cost questions

How much does composite bonding cost per tooth in Dublin?

Typically €180 to €325 a tooth. Edge bonding, on the biting edge only, is €150 to €300. A full composite veneer over the whole front of the tooth is €250 to €325.

How much is composite bonding for 6 teeth in Dublin?

About €1,080 to €1,950 for the six upper front teeth, and €1,440 to €2,600 for eight. Edge bonding on six teeth comes to €900 to €1,800.

Is the consultation included in the price?

Usually not. Most practices charge €55 to €70 for the first exam or cosmetic consultation, and some do it free. Ask whether it comes off the treatment if you go ahead.

Is there VAT on composite bonding?

No. Dental treatment is exempt from VAT in Ireland, so the price you're quoted is the price you pay.

Can I claim tax back on composite bonding?

Possibly. Revenue gives 20% tax relief on non-routine dental treatment, and its list includes veneers and etched fillings. Your dentist signs a Med 2 form after the treatment. Ask before you start whether your bonding will be certified that way.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Mostly because of how much of each tooth is covered. Edge work on a chip is quick; a full composite veneer means shaping and shading the whole front of the tooth. City-centre cosmetic practices also tend to charge more than a local practice for the same job.
